Reading Road Studio in Silver Spring, MD offers an intimate collaborative experience for artists interested in works in and on paper, artist books, installation works, and critical conversations about visual and cultural literacy. It features a hand papermaking studio for the production of papermaking as an art form. offering master classes and collaborative sessions for artists who want to explore the possibilities of using papermaking as a translucent material, painterly or dimensional experience for their work. Dialogs about visual and cultural literacy, and social activism are always alive at Reading Road Studio.

The studio provides viewing of a collection of custom papers, artists books, and a library of inspirational and instructional materials. Artist collaborations have included Buzz Spector, Randi Reiss-McCormack, Ellen Hill, Preston Sampson, Nancy Sausser, Elzbieta Sikoska, Sharon Fishel, Cheryl Edwards, Aziza Gibson Hunter, and Lisa Shreirer. Visit Facebook and Instagram to view more photos of artist collaborations. Helen Frederick offers lectures for small groups, institutions and universities regarding visual and cultural literacy, and contemporary art, including the history of hand papermaking, printmaking and artist books.

Interns would work with Helen Frederick to record her archive of work, to be part of the collaborative process of making works in hand papermaking, printmaking and bookmaking with other artists, and to absorb knowledge from the collection of artworks, resources and books, visiting artists, and experimental artistic approaches that the studio has made possible with a diverse group of artists.

Internships begin in May and continue through November. Interns must commit to at least one day a week, and in the case of visiting artists, 3-4 days in a row during their collaborative residency in the studio. Other dates might be arranged. The internship is work exchange (unpaid learning experience) and credit can be arranged with a Mason instructor.
