The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-CNPPC), Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation, Arts and Cultural Heritage Division is seeking an Arts Specialist to provide community arts services for Prince George’s County, primarily in the performing arts. Duties will include providing technical assistance and consultation to individual artists and arts organizations; developing, producing and marketing performances and performing arts classes, workshops, and festivals; assisting with other M-NCPPC activities. The position will be responsible for: supervising assigned part time staff; managing performing arts youth programs; monitoring contracts and budgets; writing proposals program evaluations; serving as a department-wide resource in the performing arts and working in partnership with other agencies.

Applicants should possess a bachelor’s degree or four years professional experience programming in the performing arts, arts management, or a related field. . This position requires working a flexible schedule, which will include some evenings and weekends.  

The requirement is for a full-time, permanent Arts Specialist, responsible for providing performing arts programs for a county-wide audience. Duties for this position include supervising Shakespeare in the Parks, The Prince George’s Children’s Theater and Teen Performance Ensemble, Choreographers’ Showcase, World Dance Showcase, and serving as a liaison within the Department of Parks and Recreation to work closely with staff to provide arts resources as needed. There are many other events, festivals, and programs that this position lends its support to throughout the year, including cultural heritage celebrations, festivals, classes, and others as requested.
 
The budgeted salary range for this position is $60,000 - $65,000. Salary is commensurate with experience.

Examples of Important Duties

The Arts Specialist will produce a variety of arts programs throughout the County to include theatre, dance performances, concerts, classes, special events, and other arts programs for youth, teens, adults and seniors. The Arts Specialist will develop arts programs for community centers, partner organizations, and the County using research for best practices in developing community arts programs. The programs should be self-sustaining, have purposeful outcomes and have a positive impact on the program’s participants.

Minimum Qualifications
  1. Bachelor's Degree in Arts, Recreation or any related field.
  2. Three (3) years of professional experience in an appropriate discipline (e.g. music, theatre, fine arts).
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total seven (7) years.
  4. Valid driver’s license , or the ability to acquire one, in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
  5. Pass Commission medical examination.
