Student Interview with Rachelle Etienne-Robinson

Body

Q: What is your hometown?

A: I was born in Queens, New York and raised in Fairfax, VA

Q: Why did you choose Mason's Arts Management program for your graduate studies?

A: I had been interested in continuing my studies and expanding my knowledge in arts management for a while, but didn’t think it was in the cards for me, due to time and finances. Prior to working for CVPA, I had worked in the arts as an administrator and knew of several friends who completed the program. I spoke to friends about their experience and everyone I spoke to had nothing but positive remarks. In 2023, I decided to try my luck and have no regrets. The faculty and my fellow peers have been very knowledgeable and inspiring. I look forward to graduating in Spring 2026.

Q: What has been your favorite class or project so far in the Arts Management Program?

A: I can’t pick a favorite class because every course has been a rewarding experience. Finance and Development taught me not to fear money. Governance taught me about the role of a board member, leadership, and board responsibilities. I thoroughly enjoyed our conversations and debates in Arts in Society. As a digital marketing coordinator, public relations and marketing was extremely helpful in working on projects from concept through execution.

Q: What is your favorite arts activity?

A: I enjoy attending performances and visiting galleries and museums.

Q: What is a piece of advice you would share with future arts managers?

A: Arts managers are essential to the creative community. During challenging times is when arts managers are needed most. Arts managers provide opportunities for both the artist and the arts lover. As a wife, mother, full-time employee, and student with a slew of other side projects and obligations; I have a lot on my plate. But, I am a firm believer that

if you want something bad enough that you will make the time. Sure, sometimes I am overwhelmed, but when investing in yourself, it’s always money well spent.

Q: Do you have any exciting projects on the horizon you can share?

A: I recently co-curated my first exhibition called Black Dress II: Homage that is currently on view at the Pratt Manhattan Gallery in New York City. I am an alumna of Pratt Institute and have been working with my co-curator, Professor Adrienne Jones on the Black Dress Project since 2015. The Black Dress II: Homage exhibition celebrates the transformative influence of Black creatives in the fashion industry. The exhibition is on view now through March 22.
